The social media trend is one development that entrepreneurs can’t really ignore or take for granted. Small, medium and big enterprise, local or international, you can never escape the weight of social media websites that have proliferated in the net and to everyone’s fingertips. On that note, you must be able to ride with the wave otherwise you will drown out of the loop.
The big question after all is how do you get started with social media? What are the right steps to using and maximizing the tools and making it an ally in your marketing process? Yes, it can be a little tricky or confusing if you get to learn that there are hundreds of social media marketing platforms available out there. So here is a guide to kick-start your advertising with social media.
The first thing that you have to be clear about is the WHAT. What are your business objectives? In other words, what are you trying to achieve. What are your goals? In other terms, what are you aspiring for? What is your target audience? In simple words, what kind of customers or followers are you targeting? These questions are very important and crucial to finding out your social media marketing plan and how you can manage it properly. Knowing and understanding what you need and want will play a key role to acquiring the right platform for your business.
Now that you have completely answered the questions, the next step to undertake is to learn and understand the different social media tools. You don’t just dive into Facebook without really knowing how it works or what it can do to your business. Some people will do a big mistake by using popular social networking sites without even trying to comprehend what the concept is all about. It may suit others but it does not mean that it may do well for your business. Here is a simple background on some of the different social media platforms that are available.
a. Blogging for business is a valuable tool for business as it freely allows you to design your advertising making you an expert in your field.
b. Forum helps you in enhancing brand recognition. You get to know a lot about your business through the opinions, comments and criticisms of other people.
c. Microblogging is also one way of branding your business and creating a buzz or your products especially for the recently launched ones.
d. Video/Photo Sharing is another way of making your business known to others by providing them a visual presentation of your business profile, products and services and other things that you can offer.
e. Social Networking sites such as LinkedIn, The Square, Digg, Mixx, Reddit, Facebook, Twitter and many others can be a powerful way to network and engage with potential consumers.
If you followed the above steps then you are on your way to utilizing social media as effective marketing tool for your business. Remember to start follow and build from there. Signed up for accounts on the social networks you feel are important for your business and begin your journey in the social media world.

I’ve been using FB for 2 years to keep myself connected to friends, potential friends and tribe members, However I have not grown my business at all via social media.
What to do?
Hi Maureen,
Social Media can be very overwhelming in the beginning. Why don’t you join us for a free webinar this Thursday where I will walk you through what you can do to get started with social media and start seeing results.
Here’s the link to register and get your log-in information:
https://www3.gotomeeting.com/register/266899518
Hope you can join us. The webinar will be recorded so if you are not available at that time and still register I’ll send you a link later for the replay.
I just visited your website and it’s really nice. You already have a good foundation. Some quick suggestions I would give you are:
- add your social networking profiles so people can connect with you there, specially a facebook fan page badge (make sure you have a facebook fan page).
- update your blog regularly so it will be picked up by search engines (I see that your last post was January of this year). If you don’t have time to write articles you can outsource it.
- think of something you can give away to the people who visit your website if they give you their email address. It’s important to build a list of possible clients so you can stay in touch with them.
Hope this helps. These are just some quick ideas and suggestions I can provide you by visiting your website.
Also, feel free to send me any questions you have about social media by going to my contact page. Would be happy to help you in any way I can.
Best of luck,
Vanessa
